Mike Patrick: Is there a game going on?

Poor Todd Blackledge. Todd Blackledge is a good announcer who has the unkind fate of sharing the booth with Mike Patrick on ESPN's Saturday Night Football. Todd provides good insight to the game (he played QB at Penn State), whereas Mike Patrick seems to just want to raise his voice when there is a good play or add insane comments. And I do mean insane comments. Here is a great example:

#22 Georgia vs #16 Alamaba 2007 - Overtime
Alabama has scored a field goal to lead 23-20.

This is an exciting game and this is the climax of the game as viewers are watching as UGA's offense takes the field as the Dawgs must either score or lose.

MP is Mike Patrick
TB is Todd Blackledge

MP: "I have an important question."

TB: "Go Ahead"

MP: "What is Britney doing with her life?"

TB: "Who?"

MP: "Britney!"

TB: "Britney who?"

MP: "Spears! What is she doing with her career?"

Todd Blackledge: "Ha-ha-ha - why do we care at this point? Is she here?"

Mike Patrick: "I don't think so."

TB: "Is she a football fan?

MP: "Oh, I'm sure she is."

In case you are not insane like Mike Patrick the Britney in question is Britney Spears, and no she was not at the game. Less than 10 seconds later UGA would win the game on a long pass. Here is a link to the video:

So either we applaud ESPN for giving a mentally challenged person a job, or was ask them to find someone else to team with Todd Blackledge. Come ESPN, enough is enough, lets get someone sane in there with Todd - show us you care about the game and get rid of Mike Patrick.

Porky Pig: Mike Patrick is Offensive

Mike Patrick does not come across as a nice guy on TV. Being nice is important as the viewer is supposed to like the sportscaster, even bond with them, Mike Patrick, The Worst SportsCasterbut Mike Patrick makes that hard to do as he comes across as a snippy, close-minded man. Why? Because Mike Patrick says some truly awful things during the game; mean; petty; small. Can the viewer bond with someone like that? Not in our world. His negativity detracts from every game we watch that he announces; his personality is so large (read meanness) that it gets in the way of enjoying the game.

A simple way to judge an announcer is: would you want to sit down and have a beer with that person. We would not want to have a beer with a man as nasty as Mike Patrick, who also resembles Porky Pig.

Why is he Bad? Here are 3 reasons:

1. He loses track of what down it is - nothing is worse then when Mike says a team is going to have to punt -- on third down! Or when he says its 2nd down, when it is really 3rd down. Why bother if you can't get it right? Might be time to hang up the ol' microphone Mike Patrick.

2. Offensive and Negative: During September of 06 game (SCR is not sure of the game, but believe it was the Ga Tech/UVA game, write in if you know the game) Mike says a player, "Earned an "A" grade in every class since the 9th grade." He then denigrates the player's accomplishment by saying, "I can't even admire that; it makes me angry." Would Mike prefer that players have low grades? Could he admire them then? Please ESPN for the love of the game, get this foul mouthed man, Mike Patrick, off the air before he offends more of your viewers and your advertisers; there is no place in sports commentary for a man with such negative opinion's of the young people playing the game.

3. "The big cheese gets the call." Mike Patrick said this during the 2006 Minnesota-Michigan game, where he said that referees will give Michigan the call over Minnesota; Mike seems to think that NCAA College Officiating is on par with Professional Wrestling, implying there is a big fix on where the "big cheese" gets the call -- tell that to "big cheese" Oklahoma during the OU-Oregon game in 2006.
